Missouri State University is a multi-campus metropolitan university system with a statewide mission in public affairs whose purpose is to develop educated persons while focusing on five themes: professional education, health, business and economic development, creative arts, and science and the environment.
To facilitate the creative arts part of the university mission the department offers four student touring groups which present programs to special audiences. For over twelve years, the In School Players, which develops and performs its own materials, continues to entertain students at local elementary schools. During the academic year, it will visit more than 60 schools. Inertia Dance Company adapts and develops material to present to local schools as well as creates special concerts to be given in the more rural areas of southwest Missouri and Arkansas where people seldom have a chance to see live dance. BareStage, a peer education performance group, creates its own materials in the area of health and social issues and appears before campus students in resident halls and Greek organizations to lead and generate discussion on the topics. Syncopation, an entertainment troupe, presents programs for fund raising and promotional purposes.
